The study of typology (or symbolic meaning) in the Word of God gives us rich insights into the plan of God. The typology of the Old Testament reveals the Person and work of Jesus Christ as fulfilled in the New Testament.

The deliverance from Egypt by the children of Israel crossing the Red Sea is a type of our redemption from the bondage of sin.

Covenant
A covenant is a serious promise of commitment and a binding agreement between two groups or persons. In this case, we are talking about a covenant between God and His people. Immediately after Israel crossed the Red Sea, God made the covenant of healing and revealed Himself as the Healer.
And said, If you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.
(Ex. 15:26)
The Hebrew name, Jehovah-Rapha, was used, meaning, "I am the Lord your Physician," or "I am the Lord Who heals you."

Covenant Names of God
Jehovah is the redemptive name for God and it means "The self-existent One Who reveals Himself."

Jehovah has seven compound redemptive names, which reveal Him as meeting every need of His covenant people:
  • Jehovah-Shammah—The Lord is there
"...and the name of the city from that day shall be: The LORD Is There" (Ezek. 48:35).

  • Jehovah-Shalom—The Lord Is Peace
"Then the LORD said to him, 'Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.' So Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it The-Lord-Shalom" (Judg. 6:23-24).

  • Jehovah-Raah—The Lord Is My Shepherd
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want" (Ps. 23:1).

  • Jehovah-Jireh—The Lord Will Provide
"Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, 'In the Mount of The LORD it shall be provided'" (Gen. 22:13-14).

  • Jehovah-Nissi—The Lord is Our Banner, Victor, or Captain
"But Moses' hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword....And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner" (Ex. 17:12-13, 15).

  • Jehovah-Tsidkenu—The Lord Our Righteousness
"In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS" (Jer. 23:6).

  • Jehovah-Rapha—I Am the Lord Your Physician; I am the Lord That Heals You
"For I am the LORD who heals you" (Ex. 15:26).
Nowhere in the Word do we see where God has canceled this covenant. Nowhere can we find that He has become "I was the Lord Your Physician," or "I was the Lord That Used to Heal Them."

Nowhere does God say, "I am the Lord your God who makes you sick." God never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and forever, and He is still our Healer!

Covenant Promise Of Healing
Jehovah-Rapha is a revelation of a covenant promise of God to provide healing for His people.

According to David, the revelation of God as Jehovah-Rapha was accepted and believed by the Israelites—to the extent that all the people enjoyed health: "There was not one feeble person among their tribes" (Ps. 105:37).

When Israel sinned and their health was affected, they repented. The Levitical sacrifices were made, and God continued to be Jehovah-Rapha to all.

Today, as we preach the gospel of redemption and atonement through Jesus Christ, we have the same promise for the sick!
