Did you ever consider that your life might be about pursuing money and things? And if it is you will wither and die? Do you think you are living for a purpose, yet you might not be?
For the sun comes up with a scorching heat and parches the grass; its flower falls off and its beauty fades away. Even so will the rich man wither and die in the midst of his pursuits. (James 1:11)
It seems natural to pursue money because that is how we have been trained to live. We grow up with the understanding that we have to provide for ourselves so we get a job for the money, to eat, for rent, and so on. That is the way we have learned to live—to pursue riches, which is going after money. Yet God says you can't serve Him and money, you have to choose one or the other (Matt. 6:24). Many have become very good at getting rich, so serving God seems worthless to them and are then in the category of serving money and becoming rich in their pursuits—only to die.

Serving God is serving an Eternal Being, and serving money is serving an inanimate object with no life; therefore with no promise for eternal life with God.

When Jesus came, He came to show us the best way to live. John 10:10 says “He came that we may have life in abundance, until it overflows.” Therefore we can see we can have more than enough; besides money, life in abundance would include happiness, peace, joy, and so on. But at the same time James says we shouldn't pursue riches.

It seems kind of confusing, but Jesus explains it in Matthew 6. He said we shouldn't worry about what we would eat, drink and wear; that life was much more important than pursuing things and that God has already made our provision for us.
Therefore I tell you, stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater [in quality] than food, and the body [far above and more excellent] than clothing?26 Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure (cubit) to his stature or to the span of his life? 28 And why should you be anxious about clothes? Consider the lilies of the field and learn thoroughly how they grow; they neither toil nor spin. 29 Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his magnificence (excellence, dignity, and grace) was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and green and tomorrow is tossed into the furnace, will He not much more surely clothe you, O you of little faith?
(Matt. 6:25-30)
Can you see that our seeking things is really a waste of time and is actually a distraction from the real meaning of life? God has a good plan for our lives; He didn't create us without provision, but He has good things in store for us. And He has provided for more than our physical needs. He has made provision for our happiness, peace, relationships, etc., and it all is related to what we were created to do—our calling.

Your part is to go after God with all you have in you. Get to know Him so you can hear His voice lead you to the good life He has for you (Eph. 2:10). Live for a purpose other than just to meet your needs.

How do you get to know God? John 1:1 tells us He is His Word; therefore as you get to know the Word, you will get to know God. Seek Him and His righteousness and whatever you need will be given to you, besides.
But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides. (Matt. 6:33)
