The fear of the Lord is referring to hating evil (Prov. 8:13). The fear of the Lord is a characteristic of holiness which we must develop (Prov. 2:1-5). It should be a desire reflective of our Christian growth.

When we Christians give ourselves to the fear of the Lord, wanting to please God and avoid evil, there are earthly benefits of which we will partake. Let's take a look at some of them.
The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.
(Prov. 10:27)

The fear of the LORD leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble.
(Prov. 19:23)
When we choose to fear the Lord we're guaranteed the blessing of a long life. It's good to know that God will protect and bless with long life those who fear Him. Let's look at another verse of Scripture.
By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor, and life.
(Prov. 22:4)
The fear of the Lord coupled with humility (recognizing God as your authority), brings three blessings: riches (natural wealth), honor (respect among men), and life (a long life). These are some of the main benefits of fearing the Lord. I think it's quite evident that it pays to fear God!
