One day in school, the teacher said, "Let's write down on a piece of paper why we love our neighbor. Your neighbor is the one sitting next to you."

"Oh no! Oh no! I thought. Do you know who sits next to me? Wilbur the Mole! NOBODY likes Wilbur (except his Mommy).

He has a long nose and little tiny dots for eyes. His fur is always mashed up. He doesn't smell good all the time either.

Sometimes he loses his crayons because is desk is so messy. I have to give him some of mine. What will I write about Wilbur? I thought. NOBODY likes Wilbur.

He forgets his snack a lot and I have to share mine. I have to help him remember things. He's always losing his mittens.

NOBODY likes Wilbur. I thought.

Just then the teacher said, "Wilbur, read what you wrote about your neighbor, Bird."

Wilbur nosed through his messy desk. He put the paper very close to his tiny little eyes and read...

"I love Bird, because he loves me. He gives me crayons when I lose mine. I know he loves me because he helps me remember things when I forget. I'm just a tiny-eyed mole with mashed-up hair, but I know that Bird is my friend."

NOBODY LIKES WILBUR except his Mommy and ME. He sure knows what love is.
