"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty" (Ps. 91:1 KJV).

You are safe when you have decided to go with Jesus. Let's dissect Psalm 91:1 to see a more in-depth meaning. The Old Testament was originally written in the Hebrew language. So we will look at the Hebrew definition of this text.

"Dwelleth" means to sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle. The Hebrew word "secret" is a covering place, a hiding place, and a place of protection. The word "place" means standing, locality or condition.

So when you are talking about the secret place you are talking about the location, a secret condition, as well as a standing with God. We see the two words, most high. "Most" means supreme, uppermost. The word "high" means safe, strong, too strong. God is too strong.

In light of the original Hebrew text, we can read it this way: He that dwelleth in the supreme uppermost, safe, strong and too strong God, shall abide.… That word, abide means to stay permanently. This is not something that you are in and out of. You backslide today and then you are back with God next week. He's talking about an individual who has made a decision to be with Jesus on the winning side.

Further, the word shadow means defense, not just shade. People think of shadow in terms of a natural shadow. But shadow here means defense. He shall abide in the defense of the Almighty, the powerful and impregnable one. That word "under" also means with. So he shall abide with the defense of the powerful and impregnable one.

Now after studying this text according to the Hebrew definitions, allow me to write Psalm 91 in the "Butler" translation:

He that sits down in the protection, standing and condition of the supreme safe and strong one shall stay permanently with the defense of the powerful and impregnable one.

When you are settled in God's will, you can give God thanks because His divine protection will act as your defense.
