The presidential election is big, but there’s a greater election that God-fearing citizens should be concerned with- their own!

You may not be running for president, but if you’ve trusted in Jesus as your personal lord and savior, you’ve been called to a high office.

You’ve been called to “walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Col. 1:10). You’ve been pre-appointed “to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29). It’s a high calling, and it ought to be pursued with as much fervor as any presidential candidate puts out.

Yet many believers will not take their office. They are not running in such a way as to win the prize (1 Cor. 9:24). The presidential candidates run to win power. Many believers live powerlessly because they fail to run.

Jesus said, “Many are called, but few are chosen” (Matt. 22:14). God has called His people to represent Him. God has called His people to be joint-heirs with His Son, Jesus Christ. He has called His people to enjoy His goodness. But few are chosen because they do not respond with faith.

Biblical faith requires more than just believing the Bible. It requires more than having the right creed. Biblical faith means responding to what God says in His Word. By faith we live in response to what God has done. We learn from the Bible all that He has given us, that we might be counted as righteous and “reign in life by one, Jesus Christ” (Rom. 5:17).

That’s a high office! But we will never enjoy all the privileges of that unless we act according to our faith. Don’t be like politicians that say one thing and do otherwise. Peter wrote, “give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall” (2 Peter 1:10). In other words, make sure to walk in the ways of your high calling, and then you will enjoy all the power that comes with it.

Paul wrote, “As the elect of God, holy and beloved, PUT ON tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering…but above all these things, put on love” (Col. 3:12-14). Dress your part! The president will not go to an important meeting in sloppy clothing. He or she will dress like a president. Christians need to dress as the elect of God, holy and beloved. Carry yourself as such. Choose to put on the clothing of Christ and represent your office with integrity. It will result in greater strength for your trials, and greater peace in your life.

You are not putting on “good” in order to earn anything — you’ve already got it all. Jesus cast the winning vote for you when He died and rose again. Let that really sink in, and you will in turn desire to campaign for Him!
