You must make the Word of God ("his truth") your shield and buckler. This psalm was written somewhere around 1000 BC. The kind of armor that they wore back in those days is different than the armor we use today. Each soldier had a shield in front of him. And each soldier had a buckler.
Now a shield's purpose was to wield off those arrows that were fired at the soldier. It covered the front of the soldier from head to toe. The Roman legion would be marching, and there would be archers on the other side who would shoot arrows at them. If one of those arrows hit a soldier, he would go down.
But they had a shield that protected them. And as long as their shield was up, they could continue to march. With all the shields up together, side by side, arrows could not get through to the men. Therefore, they could continue to march, as all those arrows would bounce off.
But the buckler was used for a different purpose. The buckler was a little shield that was attached to their arm. So if they were in close combat with somebody, they used the buckler to guard against being attacked with the enemy's sword.
The scripture said that His truth is your shield and buckler. His truth is His Word. This is what you must believe. You must utilize the Word of God in your life in order to receive the 23 promises in Psalm 91.
Utilize His truth when things get tight and you want to give up. Know that His Word is the shield against the onslaught of the enemy and it will keep you from being hit.
When things get tight, pull out the buckler of the Word. It will help you when you are in close combat right at the last minute—right at the end of things, and it looks like you are surrounded, and it looks like you are going down.
You pull out your weapon, which is the truth of the Word of God, and take the enemy down. Stay in there until you win. Keep your confidence in God and in the ability of His Word to bring you out on top.
