Whenever we watch television or read the newspaper, we can pick up on the world’s fear about identity theft. Many people are particularly concerned about this type of theft. Criminals are out in force to try and steal our identity, and we should rightly be careful to protect our information. But God has His own message about identity, and it’s highly encouraging.

The devil is hard at work trying to whip us into a terrified frenzy, and this is one way he does it. But fear never accomplishes anything productive—sometimes what we’re most afraid of is exactly what happens to us. “For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came” (Job 3:25, 26). Our thoughts are powerful, and like Job, when we dwell on something long enough, it can come to pass.

The identity we work so hard to protect is based on numbers and data, which thieves can swipe. But when we trust in God to protect us in every area of our lives, we receive a peace of mind the world will never be able to understand or possess. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7, NIV). God’s peace is stronger than any spirit of fear roaming the earth today.

There’s something else I want to point out. When we become born again and accept Jesus, we receive the same divine identity as Him. Thieves can’t steal this identity, no matter how hard they try.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.
(Romans 8:14-16)
As His children, we inherit the promises of safety, security, peace of mind, and protection.

Now, that won’t stop the devil from trying to scare us. His mission is to block every blessing God has in store for us, but he’s destined to fail. “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10, NKJV). The life God envisions for us is one of victory without fear.

This doesn’t excuse us from using due diligence, being careful and cautious, and using common sense. But when we take God’s Word to heart, we won’t have the same nagging fear that stalks the world. No matter where cybercriminals hide or how carefully they plan their attack, God Himself will defeat them. “How long will you attack a man? You shall be slain, all of you, like a leaning wall and a tottering fence” (Psalm 62:3, NKJV).

Hearing media reports about the latest case of computer hacking or identity theft can be unsettling, but we must carefully filter everything we hear against the Word of God. When bad news rises, keep the Good News in mind. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” (Ps. 23:4). It’s hard for the enemy to succeed when we’re ready for him.
