When God is getting ready to do something on this earth, the first thing He does is prepare the way by looking for someone to pray.
A voice of one who cries: Prepare in the wilderness the way of the Lord [clear away the obstacles]; make straight and smooth in the desert a highway for our God! Every valley shall be lifted and filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked and uneven shall be made straight and level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory (majesty and splendor) of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it. A voice says, Cry [prophesy]! And I said, What shall I cry? [The voice answered, Proclaim:] All flesh is as frail as grass, and all that makes it attractive [its kindness, its goodwill, its mercy from God, its glory and comeliness, however good] is transitory, like the flower of the field.
(Isa. 40:3–6)
When Isaiah was prophesying about this, the people understood the description. When the king would leave to go from one destination to another, a road crew would go out and prepare a highway for the king. Potholes in the road would be filled. Mountains would be brought low and valleys would be filled in. They made a total and complete highway.

When you pray what God leads you to pray, you prepare the way of the Lord.

At the turn of the century, Sister Aimee McPherson would go out and scope towns before she ever went there. She would see what is happening in the town, visit the churches and see how the pastors were conducting their congregations. (This was before she had larger meetings later in her ministry.) One of the requirements of the revival she was coming to bring to the city was that the churches would be filled with strong prayer.

At that time, churches had something called “mourning benches” across the front of the church. People would kneel down there and pray for revival. Aimee said, “I’ll never go to a city where the churches do not have mourning benches.” Why? Because there was no preparation of the Spirit.

When God gives you an assignment, there is a working by prayer that prepares the way for God to move. That is why the Holy Spirit moves upon you. He starts moving in this way because there is an event that He wants to see happen and in that way, there is a preparation of the Spirit by the Spirit of God. As a missionary from Bangladesh said, “Lord, let me walk tomorrow where You have worked this very night.”

Some prayer assignments last for years. Some last for a few hours. Some last for a few months or a few years. Some assignments you think you’ve been released from, then years later, you pick them up again. Assignments can be for a person, a group of people, a project, an event, a situation.

In the mind of God, every prayer assignment is equal in importance. We never look at someone’s prayer assignment and say, “I want their assignment.” Be faithful to your assignments and you’ll get more.

Individual assignments are very important as God prepares the way to move, but there is one assignment that we should all take on, and that is corporate prayer, especially when we pray together for our nation and Israel. It’s here the power of agreement is so strong and brings much to the situation.

I would like to ask you to agree in prayer with me for America and our leaders.
“Father, we lift up America to you and all our leaders across this great land. Send in laborers to those at every level to bring the Gospel to all who are not saved. May they come out of the snare and trap of the devil and make Jesus their Lord. Let Your Mighty Hand rest upon our leaders in America and may godly wisdom enter their hearts. We pray that discretion would watch over them and understanding would keep them. Separate them from evil and contaminating influences and let our leaders walk with men and women of an honorable and upright agenda.

“Illuminate and strengthen our leaders to do what is right for America and Israel. Give our leaders a revelation that those who bless Israel will be blessed. Cause our leaders’ hearts to be turned to make right decisions that will position America to stand firm for Israel and not pressure them to compromise, make concessions against Your will, or enter into alliances, agreements, or leagues with known terror organizations and enemies. Oh Lord, that America would know continued blessing and not judgment. We pray America would comfort Israel and undergird her with help, bounty, and defense.

“We thank you Lord that those who bless Israel will be blessed and America will continue to be led by leaders who love and honor the Great I Am and forever be one nation under God.

“We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen and amen.”
