Spiritual Shock Treatment
Written by Ron Luce
A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was sterile and remained childless.

The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, "You are sterile and childless, but you are going to conceive and have a son.

"Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean,

"Because you will conceive and give birth to a son. No razor may be used on his head, because the boy is to be a Nazarite, set apart to God from birth, and he will begin the deliverance of Israel from the hands of the Philistines."
(Judges 13:2-5)
Samson was destined to be very special and used by God in a very mighty way. Can you imagine an angel telling your mother that you were going to be born so you could deliver an entire nation from the enemy? Samson had the edge before he was even born!

Samson had quite a life. He married a Philistine woman who betrayed him. When she was given to Samson's friend to be his wife, Samson killed the Philistines for revenge, and the Philistines in turn burned his wife and her father. (See Judges 13-15.) The Philistines hated Samson with a passion.

Judges 16:1 tells us that he began seeing a prostitute named Delilah in Gaza. By this time he was a leader in Israel. So here's Samson, who was committed to the Lord his whole life and is a leader in Israel, sleeping with a prostitute!

The people of Gaza told the Philistines Samson was visiting Delilah, but he escaped by getting up in the middle of the night, grabbing the doors at the city gate which weighed a ton, tearing them loose, and carrying them to the top of a hill. That can't be done with average human strength. It had to be a supernatural, God-given strength.

How could God allow this? This guy's acting like a total heathen. He's a backslider who's in extreme sin!

"For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance" (Rom. 11:29, KJV).

This verse is one of the most important to understand to keep the edge. God is warning us, "Look, I gave you talents, abilities, and a mission on this earth. You will always have these, whether you're a believer or not, whether your heart is right with Me or not. So don't be fooled when you sin and the gifts are still there and the doors to do what I called you to do still open. The wages of sin is ultimately still death!" (See Romans 3:23.)

You can walk through the doors and use your talents and gifts while you're sinning in some area of your life, but if you do not allow the Spirit and the Word of God to deal with that sin and you don't get the help you need to get rid of it, it will eventually destroy your life. And the first thing that happens when you start on this path of destruction is that you lose the edge.

You only have the edge when your heart, soul, mind, and strength totally belong to God.

If you lose the edge, you will eventually lose the anointing. When you lose the anointing, you end up doing everything by your own ability—you have no power. Don't play with sin thinking, God forgives me. Hey, it's okay. It's not okay and it's not worth losing the edge!

Are you involved in sinful activity that could cause you to lose the edge?

What are some areas you need to commit to the Lord so He can strengthen you?
