Bigger Than Yourself

Winning 101
Written by Van Crouch

To be a man is to matter to someone outside yourself, or to some calling or cause bigger than yourself.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession.
1 Peter 2:9 NASB
One night in 1979, Vietnam veteran Jan Scruggs went to see the movie The Deer Hunter. The next day, he decided that he would build a memorial to honor those who had died in Vietnam.

He later held a press conference to announce the formation of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Fund and immediately received praise from veterans and skepticism from just about everyone else.

Still, Scruggs was a man with a mission. He was determined that the memorial—as yet neither funded nor designed—would be dedicated three years later on November 13, Veteran's Day, 1982.

It was.

Scruggs no doubt felt he had to fight the war all over again before the monument became a reality. There were flights over where to locate the memorial and squabbles over the design.

Construction permits were withheld. But in the end, the Veterans Wall, with its more than 58,000 engraved names, was built on the Mall between the Washington and Lincoln memorials in Washington, DC.

Scruggs was dedicated to a cause bigger than himself. Are you? Does your concern for others compel you to want to serve them and honor them? Ask God to give you a true mission for your life.
