“For we are His workmanship…” (Eph. 2:10 NKJ).
The original Greek word translated workmanship in this verse is poiema (poy’-ay-mah), from which we derive our English word poem. Thus, in a sense, this verse tells us that we Christians are God’s “poetry.”
As believers, we have a new existence now that we knew nothing about when we were living in our sins. People’s lives are either B.C. (“before conversion”) or A.D. (“after deliverance”).
Before our conversion, our lives didn’t make any sense. There was no rhyme or reason to them at all. Because of the sin in our hearts, we only lived for self-gratification. Our lives were in disharmony, discord and disarray.
After our deliverance, things took on a new symmetry. The Lord began bringing harmony where there had been disharmony. Gradually we became concordant instead of discordant. Bit by bit we were fashioned into God’s poiema. His work of art. His “poem.”
As people observe us they can see the work of God’s grace in us. Because our lives are resonant, they “ring a bell” with unbelievers who can sense that our hearts vibrate in tune with the heartbeat of our heavenly Father.
Thus we are God’s artistic expression. Our lives reflect a purpose, a meaning, a message to fallen humanity that our Lord can take a life that is in total chaos and can turn it into His poiema, His workmanship.
