“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.”
Don’t destroy yourself by getting drunk. Let the Spirit fill your life. These are the instructions given by the Holy Spirit. Be filled with the Spirit of God. We are born of the Spirit in the new birth. We are filled with the Spirit in our baptism with the Holy Spirit.
Now Paul is telling those who are already filled to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit instead of being overcome by wine and wild living.
The Message Bible says: “Don’t drink too much wine. That cheapens your life. Drink the Spirit of God, huge draughts of him.”
One translation of this verse says to “be being filled” with the Holy Spirit. That implies that we need a continual relationship and a continual fellowship with the Spirit of God to allow a continual infilling of His life and ability.
Life is hard enough with all of its ups and downs. We don’t need to be going up and down with the world. We need to let God take control. So yield yourself to the influence of the Spirit.
I must not be drunk with wine. I must be continually filled and renewed by the Spirit.
