Do We Have to Forgive Others for God to Forgive Us?

by Joseph Cameneti | Uncategorized

Is it true that God won’t forgive us of our sins unless we forgive others who wrong us?

Yes, the Bible does teach that God does not forgive us unless we forgive others. Let’s examine some of the more familiar Scriptures on this subject.

For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses
(Matt. 6:14-15 NKJ)

And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.
(Mark 11:25-26 NKJ)

Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
(Luke 6:37 NKJ)

According to these scriptures, Christians must forgive others in order for God to grant them forgiveness for their own sins. The practice of forgiving others is essential in the lives of Christians.

Forgiving others provides an open door to enable us to have ongoing fellowship with God. Together with God’s forgiveness toward us, forgiving others is an important part of our life because we’re all imperfect. We need the mercy and forgiveness of God in our lives on a daily basis.
