Through meditation the creative ability of God is developed in our hearts. The things God wants to do for us must be conceived in our spirits before they become a reality in our lives. Luke 1:29-35 gives an example of how we can give birth to the Word of God in the earth. In these verses, the angel Gabriel visits a virgin named Mary with the startling news that she would conceive and bear a son.
Then the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And, behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.’
Then Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I do not know a man?’
And the angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.’
(Luke 1:29-35)
The angel told Mary of an event that was absolutely impossible. Never before in history had a woman given birth to a child that was conceived by the Holy Spirit. If we think we are facing an impossible situation, we should consider Mary’s. It had to be accomplished by the Holy Spirit, or it would not be done at all.
Every time God gives us an assignment, He will require us to make a step of faith. God is a faith God, and He requires faith of His people. We’re required to act by faith, then it becomes the responsibility of the Holy Spirit to bring it to pass.
If we have a situation in our lives that looks impossible, God said something to Mary that we need to hear. He said, “For with God nothing will be impossible” (Luke 1:37). There isn’t a situation in our lives beyond the realm of the possibility of God if we will believe.
Notice in verse 34 Mary asked the angel a question: “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
The angel had also visited a man named Zacharias and told him he would have a son. To Zacharias this was impossible since his wife Elizabeth was barren. Zacharias also asked the angel a question: “How shall I know this?” (v. 18). The Message says it this way: “Do you expect me to believe this? I’m an old man and my wife is an old woman.”
From these two examples we learn that it must be permissible to ask a question of an angel. But each question received a different result. Mary’s question did not challenge God. She simply wanted to know how it would be done. The answer to her question was: “By the Holy Ghost.”
However, Zacharias questioned God’s integrity. That is not the way to respond to God, and Zacharias realized this after he was struck speechless.
When God speaks to us, don’t look for a sign because God doesn’t lead us through signs. Believers are not expected to follow signs; signs are to follow believers!
God leads us by our spirits. He will speak to us in our spirits; then if a confirming sign comes by the Holy Spirit, we can receive it with joy. Believe the promise of God today!
