What did Jesus mean when He said "you are the light of the world"?

Matthew states,
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
(Matt. 5:14-16 NKJ)
Jesus is speaking to those who would believe in Him. He declared that we are to be the light of the world. Light always exposes darkness! We allow our light to shine through our actions.

When men and women who don't believe in Jesus see our good works (holy lifestyle and good deeds towards all men), they will glorify our Father, God.

It is important that we Christians realize that people are observing us and learning about God as a result of our lifestyles. Jesus also said that our love towards one another would enable others to know we are true believers.

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:34-35 NKJ).

This world needs us to do the Word, as well as share the Word, with everyone we encounter. Let us make certain that our lights are shining before all people!
