Second Corinthians 4:18 says, “While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

Sound complicated? Let’s take a closer look at this verse. First of all, the Apostle Paul had been dealing with the subject of “living by faith.” One of the key ingredients to “living by faith” is learning to completely trust in God. When it comes to “living by faith” the question is, “who ya gonna trust?”

1 John 5:4-5 says, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”

If you are going to live by faith, it is very important to determine who you put your trust in, …the world, the flesh, emotions, or what God’s Word says.  As believers, God is asking us to trust Him.

Will you trust in your natural-connection to things around you in this world or will you trust in your supernatural-connection with God, your Heavenly Father?  If you put your trust in God, then you will also have to put your trust in His Word. Paul says, “look not at the things which are seen…” Here the word “seen” means, “things perceived (or understood) by the senses.”

Most people operate by the five-physical senses; seeing, tasting, touching, smelling and hearing. Those senses allow you to function in this world (or earth realm). These senses are vital when it comes to operating in this natural world. When you get close to an open fire, your senses alert you and say, “it’s hot and if you touch it, you will get burned!” Things around you in this natural-world feed the five-physical senses. However, as a born again believer you cannot allow those physical-senses to control you when it comes to “living by faith.”  You must learn to use your spiritual-senses as you learn to rely on God’s Word.

In John 3:6 Jesus tells us, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Once you are born-again, you have access to the world of the spirit or the spirit-realm. You now have “spiritual-sensors” and an “operations manual” called the Bible, God’s Word, which explains to you how to use your newfound spiritual senses.

The Bible tells you, “Do not look at the things which are (perceived by the senses).”  Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own (carnal or natural) understanding…” In other words, don’t let natural reasoning be the controlling or dominant source of information in your life! You can figure things out with your natural ability to reason (the 5-senses), but don’t let those senses make the final determination. Instead,  trust in the Lord and the counsel of His Word, in spite of the information you receive from your natural-senses! Let the Word be your first source of reliable information.

Second Corinthians 5:7 says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”  The word “sight” here in this verse is also talking about walking or living by your physical senses. But instead of walking by sight, we can walk by faith, meaning by your spiritual-senses, which are fed by the Word of God.

Brothers and Sisters, there will be times that your natural, fleshly, physical senses tell you that “it looks like you’re going under” or that “it doesn’t sound like you’re going to make it.”  At that moment in time, you will be faced with a decision. Will you believe what your fleshly, physical senses have determined about your circumstances, through natural reasoning, or will you decide to trust in the Lord and believe what His Word says?

The Bible says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil. 4:13)
The Bible says that you are “more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37) and not just conquerors, but more than conquerors.

The Bible says, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 15:57)” and there are many other scriptures in the Bible that gives you a now word filled with now answers and the hope that you need, even though at that very moment it seems like God is not there for you.

In every circumstance, God promises that He “…will never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb. 13:5). When life gets rough, who ya gonna trust?  The answer is trust in the Lord and “do not look at the things which are (perceived by the senses), but at the things which are not (perceived by the senses). For the things which are (perceived by the senses) are temporary (or subject to change), but the things which are not (perceived by the senses) are eternal.”  Let your main focus be upon the Word of God as you continue living by faith!”
