mountainsnowOur lives can be challenging and stressful at times, and most of us have faced situations that made us want to run and hide. We do our best to deal with whatever comes our way, but occasionally we can feel overwhelmed and unable to cope. When we need protection against what feels like a tidal wave of trouble threatening to wash us away, we don’t have to face it alone. We can hide behind Christ, the immovable rock.

Placing our trust in God allows Him to take responsibility for our safety. It doesn’t matter what’s happening around us, because we’re perfectly secure in Him. In the Old Testament, the people built rock fortresses to hide behind for protection from the enemy. God is that rock and that place of refuge for us, only infinitely stronger. “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower” (Psalm 18:2).

We can be thankful that not only does He protect and strengthen us, He also rescues us. Whether our situation is the result of our own mistakes and bad choices or because of what someone else did, He’s always willing and able to pluck us out of danger and deliver us to safety. “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings” (Psalm 40:2). God always keeps His promise to make a way out of a bad situation when we call on Him for help.

If we depend on our own resources to handle trouble, we’ll quickly find out how easily we can be moved from what we thought was a secure position. God doesn’t want us to suddenly find ourselves in over our heads. Trusting only in ourselves puts us on shaky ground, but trusting in His Word gives us stability.“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it” (Matt. 7:24-27).

In the Bible, the fact that God is referred to as our rock more than one hundred times reveals that we can rely on Him for strength and stability even when our whole world is crumbling around us. We can be knocked down when we depend on ourselves, but never when we depend on Him. Things can be going great one day and terrible the next, but when others around us are falling apart, we escape trouble by running to Him for our protection. “In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me” (Psalm 31:1-3). He’s always there for us!
