To Speak To God And Learn Of Him:
For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the (Holy) Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding].
(1 Cor. 14:2)
To Edify And Improve Yourself:
He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself, but he who prophesies—interpreting the divine will and purpose and teaching with inspiration—edifies and promotes growth [in Christian wisdom, piety, holiness and happiness].
(1 Cor. 14:4)
To Build Your Faith And Make Progress In Your Spiritual Walk With The Lord:
But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith—make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher—praying in the Holy Spirit.
(Jude 20)
To Keep Your Spirit Alert And To Intercede For Others:
Pray at all times—on every occasion, in every season—in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God's consecrated people).
(Eph. 6:18)
To Help You When You Don't Know What To Pray:
So too the (Holy) Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance.
(Rom. 8:26)
To Keep Your Spirit And Mind In Harmony:
Therefore, the person who speaks in an [unknown] tongue should pray [for the power] to interpret and explain what he says.

For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit [by the Holy Spirit within me] prays, but my mind is unproductive—bears no fruit and helps nobody.

Then what am I to do?  I will pray with my spirit—by the Holy Spirit that is within me; but I will also pray intelligently—with my mind and understanding; I will sing with my spirit—by the Holy Spirit that is within me; but I will sing (intelligently) with my mind and understanding also.
(1 Cor. 14:13-15)
I encourage you to seek to interpret to yourself what you are saying when you speak in tongues. It helps your spirit and mind to stay in harmony.

When you first start doing this, you may wonder if the words you are speaking are just your own. But as you continue to seek and worship God, He will become more and more real to you, and you will begin to discern that the Person speaking through you is God.

One last and possibly the most important word about the infilling of the Holy Ghost: speak in tongues often—daily and throughout the day.

The Apostle Paul, who wrote some of the greatest teachings on the Holy Ghost, said, "I thank God that I speak in [strange languages more than any of you or all of you put together" (1 Cor. 14:18).

He spoke in tongues continually to stay in tune with what God wanted him to do, to edify himself and to strengthen himself in the Lord.

I believe you'll find a tremendous difference in your life as you choose to use this wonderful gift from God to help you be the best you can be.

Cheryl Salem walked the runway to become Miss America 1980, despite what appeared to be all odds stacked against her. Poverty, sexual abuse, a horrific car crash that resulted in a physical handicap and over 100 stitches in her face were no match for what God had planned for her life. Through simple, childlike faith in Him, she overcame these insurmountable obstacles and eventually took the crown in Atlantic City! She has used this distinction as a springboard to launch the Gospel of Jesus Christ into churches, schools, women's retreats, television appearances, etc. Prison ministries, women's shelters, inner-city outreaches, and disaster relief programs have made use of Cheryl's books and CDs to offer hope and help to those in need. According to Cheryl, "None of these things would be possible, if not for my Jesus."
