I've heard some Bible teachers say that the church should take over cities that they live in and that the Christians should strive to be in control of businesses and politics. Is the church (born-again Christians) going to take over the earth?

The church is to be light and salt (preservative) in the world in which we live (Matt. 5:13-16). We do this as we live among those who don't believe in Jesus as Savior.

We also have a commission from the Lord to preach the Gospel to people in every nation. For those who believe the Gospel, we are to make them disciples of the Lord (Mark 16:15-16; Matt. 28:19-20).

Jesus never mentioned, nor do the Scriptures teach us, that Christians are to take over in the way that you mentioned. The Lord might desire for a particular Christian to own a business or run for a political office, but we are not to have a "take over the earth mentality."

Notice these Scriptures:
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?

Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless.
(2 Peter 3:10-14)
Our goal should not be to take over the earth, but we should desire to be found spotless and without blame when Jesus comes for us.

We are to have our hearts focused on the second coming of Jesus.
