Have you ever felt overwhelmed? I think we all have. It seems like at certain times in our lives, everything hits at once. Just like the old saying, when it rains, it pours. When everything seems to be falling apart in your life, you become overwhelmed with the pressure. The definition of overwhelm is to submerge, overcome by superior forces or numbers, to cover up or to crush.

Just recently, I have seen so many people who are being overcome by life. Life is trying to crush them. But God has given us a way whereby we don't have to be overwhelmed.

In the Bible in Psalm 55:4-8, we see the psalmist David having these same feelings:

My heart is sore pained within me, and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest. Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.

Have you ever been to the place where fear and trembling have come upon you? Or the horror of failure has filled your mind? I've been to that place. I can relate to what David was feeling. I had financial pressure so great one time that it felt like even if God came from heaven in His chariot loaded with money, He still wouldn't have enough.

Several years ago, Jerry and I decided that we wanted to build our own office buildings for the ministry, so we began looking for land to purchase. We didn't have several million dollars to go purchase land and buildings, so the Lord told Jerry and I to give our home and land to the ministry. Our home and land was paid for. Every woman's dream is to have her home paid for!

So, Jerry and I obeyed God. Since we had given everything we owned, we had to lease a house to move into until our new home was built. I hadn't done that in my entire life because we had always owned our homes. But we had just given away everything that we had ever worked for personally.

So not only was our new house under construction, but we began building our offices all at the same time. In the meantime, we had already built over 50 churches and a medical clinic in Kenya, and they needed thousands of dollars just to keep them going. The financial pressure was great - to put it mildly.

One day, I went out to the ministry to see how things were going, and the builder said to me, "Mrs. Savelle, we went over budget on the offices, and the parking lot is going to cost an additional $35,000...."

So, I walked down to my house and when I walked in, another builder said, "Mrs. Savelle, the staircase is going to cost $2,000 more than the price I quoted you, and the counters in the kitchen are more than we thought...."

Then I learned that the roofer ran off to Mexico with the money we had paid him, so guess who had to come up with the money for the roofing again? We did.

I felt like I was going to fall apart. Numbers were overwhelming me. I'll never forget standing there that day and feeling like the weight of the whole world was on my shoulders. It looked absolutely hopeless.

Then during all this time of building, my dad was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor and if he was operated on, he could die or live to be a vegetable! My oldest daughter decides she wants to get married. And she didn't want just any ordinary wedding. Then, it was time for my youngest daughter to begin her freshman year of college, so we needed tuition money.

I wanted to be like the psalmist David, "Oh that I had wings like a dove and I could fly away into the wilderness and be at rest...." Just tell the world to leave me alone!

In the natural, when life feels overwhelming, people can be approached with thoughts of suicide because they feel hopeless. They don't see any answers to their problems. It's overwhelming!

I went home that day feeling completely overwhelmed at life. I walked in the house and began pacing up and down the floor praying in the Spirit for at least one hour. Now, I had been praying all along, but this time I began to pray, not for us, not for our ministry, I began to pray for other people and other ministries. I began to pray for their finances and sowing seeds for them. I prayed and prayed and prayed and I want to tell you that I began to tap into a wellspring.

All of a sudden, a peace, a comfort, a calm that the world cannot understand and a doctor cannot prescribe, came all over me. It's unexplainable. It only comes from the Word of God and from the Holy Spirit being in you.

I am a living testimony that God can completely turn everything around. God totally took care of our finances in every area (and my dad is alive and in great health) and we weren't beat up and half dead at the end, we had the peace of God that passes all human understanding and the assurance that our God does provide.

Psalm 61:1-2 says, Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Jesus is your Rock, your Fortress, your Deliverer in every situation. When you feel like you can't take anymore, run to Jesus.

We all go through things that try to overwhelm us and make us feel like we're not fit or qualified. I'm just like you. We all go through these things, but we don't have to be affected by trials. Your attitude will either make you or break you. It will determine how long this trial will last in your life.

We depend on so many things now to take care of our problems, going to counseling, talking to a friend, reading books on this and that, but I'm telling you, there is one sure cure: going to the Lord Jesus Christ and praying in the Holy Spirit. You will be a changed person. You won't have to go to counseling to find out 15 steps to get out of depression. I'm not against counseling, I'm all for it, but go back to some basics of God's Word and allow the Holy Spirit to build you up - restore that peace and joy in your heart.

Don't stay there and suffer until you die. Get up, get fighting mad at the devil and draw from this wellspring that's on the inside of you. Go ahead and start praising God for the victory. You are a winner full of the peace of God and the joy of the Lord! You have what it takes to overcome this situation - now go for it!
