"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand]."
(Ps. 91:1)

Once you know from God's Word that divine protection belongs to you, there are some conditions you must keep to activate that protection in your life. The Word of God makes these conditions very clear.

You can find the first one at the beginning of Psalm 91: "He who abides in the secret place of the Most High shall remain fixed under the shadow of the Almighty."

If you are to enjoy God's protection, you're going to have to abide in Him. To abide means to dwell in. It is a word that implies not a temporary situation but a permanent dwelling place—the place where you make your home. It doesn't indicate a coming in and going out but a continual dwelling under God's shadow.

What does it take to become an abider? Putting God's Word in your heart, for one thing. In John 15:7, Jesus said, "If you live in Me—abide vitally united to Me—and My words remain in you and continue to live in your hearts, ask whatever you will and it shall be done for you."

The truth that is alive in your heart is the truth that you act on every day. It doesn't come from simply reading a scripture once, shouting hallelujah, and going on. It comes from knowing the Word so well that it comes to your thinking instantly in a crisis situation.

Truth comes alive in you when you think about it, meditate on it and apply it to your life, so at the moment of danger, the Word of God is your first thought.

Deep Into The Word
Abiding under the shadow of the Almighty is the result of spending so much time in the Word of God and in His presence that His truth governs your actions without even a conscious thought.

If you want to be an abider, you can't afford to simply get into the Word for a while and then quit. You need to be consistent. Stay in the Word day after day after day. Take the 91st Psalm into yourself daily until it becomes engrafted in your heart.

Remember this: it's the Word you act on today that will get you delivered. It's not what you heard last year. It isn't even what you know. It's what you do. Keep yourself full of God's Word and you will do it.

If that sounds like a tall order to you, let me promise you something. For every minute you invest in the Word of God you'll get back a hundredfold in health, faith and deliverance. You'll never regret a second of it.

Disobedience Is Dangerous
Another definition of abiding is simply obeying. First John 3:6 says, "Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not." The reverse of that is also true—whoever sins (or is disobedient) does not abide in Him.

If you'll look at the first chapter of Proverbs, you'll see just how dangerous disobedience can be. You will see why, when most people need supernatural protection, it isn't there for them.

Beginning in verse 23, God says:
If you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I [Wisdom], will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make My words known to you.

Because I have called and you refused [to answer], have stretched out my hand and no man heeded it, But you have treated as nothing all my counsel, and would accept none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic.
(Prov. 1:23-26)

Then will they call upon me [Wisdom], but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently, but they will not find me. Because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord.
(vv. 28-29)

But whoso hearkens to me [Wisdom], shall dwell securely and in confident trust, and shall be quiet without fear or dread of evil.
(v. 33)
Thank God, we're living in the day of grace and mercy and it's never too late to call upon the Lord. But I am going to tell you this: If you haven't been abiding in the Word (God's wisdom revealed to us), it's going to be difficult for you to call on Him in faith when calamity comes.

If you've been living every day by the world's standards, at the moment of crisis it will be hard for you to take your dependence off the world and put it on Him.

So what you need to do is start abiding in the Word of God now! If you don't, it will eventually cost you more than you want to pay.
Because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord, they would have none of my reproof, therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be satiated with their own devices.
(Prov. 1:29-31)
In other words, if you're going to live like the world, your outcome is going to be like that of the world. "But whoso hearkens to me [Wisdom], shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet without fear or dread of evil" (Prov. 1:33).

Now that's the kind of supernatural protection promised to those who abide.
