What is the role of a father? A father is a provider. He provides security, direction, and wisdom. He is the one who allows us to make mistakes, not condemning or judging us, but redirecting us back to the right path.

Father’s Day is celebrated around the world in many different ways. In America we celebrate this day in June, showering our dads with our love and special attention. But how much attention do you give your Father in heaven? How often do you spend time with Him and get to know Him better? Do you know what role He expects a father to take in a child’s life?

Our Father in heaven is the ultimate provider. The Bible gives us the complete description of what God intends a father to be. It gives us stories that describe what a good father should be like, as in the story of the Prodigal Son. This story shows the patience of a father, waiting for his son who took his inheritance early and went away and squandered it. This father watched and waited to for his son to return. And when he did his father received him with open arms and compassion.

The Bible also tells stories of fathers who have sinned. These stories show how the consequences of those sins fell upon their children. David’s sin of taking Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife, brought about the death of his first son. Amnon, one of David’s sons, raped David’s daughter Tamar, and in-turn David’s other son Absalom took Amnon’s life. A father’s failure to direct and correct pride, lust, and other such behaviors in himself or his children will reap unpleasant consequences. God gives us these stories so that fathers can learn what works and what doesn’t, what’s right and what’s wrong. He gives us the guide, but we need to read it!

God, our Father in Heaven, is better than any earthly father ever tried to be. He is kind, loving and caring.  He is a father who knows you intimately. God only wants the best for you. You can count on Him; He will always be truthful. He is always around. God will never leave you or forsake you. How can you get to know him?

You can truly know your heavenly father by knowing His son Jesus!  He is the hero we should all look up to. God sent his one and only Son down to earth to lead the way to God, the Father. We cannot possibly know God the Father and get close to him in our sinful state. But Jesus has paved that path of righteousness for us. God graciously adopts those who put their faith in Christ Jesus, when we repent of our sins, and trust Him for our salvation. He blesses us as adopted sons and daughters.

This Father’s Day I hope you will spend time with your Heavenly Father. Let Him know how special He is to you.
