Whenever we contemplate the idea of a "perfect gift", all sorts of variations can come to mind. What one person may view as "perfect" is completely different from what the next person may think it is. With so many individual perceptions, how could there be just one ultimate gift that would be "perfect" for everybody?

To answer that question, let's take a look at James 1:17:

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
(James 1:17)
Every perfect gift comes from God, the Father of lights. In order to give a perfect gift to someone, we have to get it from the Lord. You may be wondering how to get a gift from God. Does God have a store where we can buy things? No, not really. But He does have treasure houses.

Isaiah 33:6 says that the reverence of the Lord is the treasure houseof His wisdom. When we worshipfully reverence and honour the Lord, it gives us access to His treasure of wisdom.

Wisdom is just one of God's treasure houses. He has other treasuries full of all kinds of good gifts and blessings. Healing, peace, prosperity, joy, godly friends, answers to problems, favour, just to name a few. From His treasuries, the Lord can bring to you the things that you desire: money, house, or car that you and your loved ones need. He can even help you find something that you lost or show you the perfect gift you were trying to come up with for your friend.

How can you and I get these kinds of gifts from God? Well, how would you get a gift from someone else? You could try to hint around about what you are wanting, but that probably wouldn't work so well. You could go to them and ask them for what you want and then wait for their answer.

Jesus said, "Ask, and you will receive. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you." (Matt. 7:7)

We have seen that every good gift and every perfect gift comes from God. In order to receive those good and perfect gifts, we have to ask Him and seek Him for them.

Remember how Isaiah 33:6 said that reverence and honour for the Lord is wisdom's treasure house and the way to receive God's wisdom is through worshipfully reverencing Him? Every gift of God is received in the same way.

If you have been looking for just the right gift to give someone, begin to ask God to show you the perfect gift for them. It may be something totally different than you would have thought. If you will get your gift from Him, it will be the perfect gift.

First John 4:16 says, "God is Love".  He is love and everything that comes from Him is full of love. Since God islove and everything He does is done in love, love is the most perfect gift of all.  Love is what gives every gift its meaning. Without love, a gift means nothing.

As you give gifts to others, remember to fill your gifts with love. As you receive gifts, remember that every good gift comes ultimately from God. If you will keep a fresh supply of love with you at all times, you will never be without a gift to give.

There are a lot of good things to have and enjoy, but love will always be the most perfect gift of all.
