A quality local church music program doesn't just happen; it must be built. And just as the construction of a building doesn't just happen overnight, the same holds true for constructing a music department.

In this article, we will lay out our third building block - The Leader Must Have Some Natural Musical Ability.

You Can't Impart What You Don't Have
Chenaniah instructed because he was skillful. You must have some natural musical ability if you are going to lead in music.

In your inner ear is a microscopic organ called "the organ of corti." Under a microscope you would see that the organ of corti produces vibrating strings as music is heard.

The number of strings varies with each individual, and it is the vibration of the strings in your inner ear that allow you to hear and reproduce music by singing or playing.

That is why some people are more musically adept than others. They are just more gifted in that area. That doesn't mean others shouldn't sing or praise the Lord. After all, Psalm 150:6 says, "Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord."

Every born again child of God should participate in and enjoy singing and praising God. But that doesn't mean everyone should be on stage leading with a microphone. Some people just need to make their "joyful noise" from their seat in the congregation.

If you are going to grow and have true excellence, the leader must be blessed with some natural musical ability.
