On July 4, 2010, it will be 234 years since a group of men gathered in the east room of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to sign the Declaration of Independence.

They carried out this act to express their dedication and commitment to live independently of England and their king's rulership.

This one act of independence resulted in the formation of 13 colonies, which today are known as The United States of America.

Brave Beginnings
Although the United States is now one of the most powerful nations on the earth, this never would have been achieved if a small group of individuals had not refused to continue to live under the dominion of another authority.

Christians, whether they are Americans or not, all celebrate a similar day as well. It is a day not recorded by man; it is not penned on any calendar. Rather, it is established in the hearts of all of those who believe in what was accomplished on that day.

This was the day we accepted that Jesus made a decree by the shedding of his blood. This was the day when we believed that He suffered in order to declare the Independence of mankind from the authority of the devil.

Another Independence Day
On the cross that day (almost 2000 years ago), Jesus died as our perfect substitute and for the next three days that followed, He went to hell to redeem (rescue, repurchase) mankind from the curse of the law—poverty, sickness and spiritual death.

As a 12-year-old boy, I walked down from the balcony of a crowded church in a small Eastern Kentucky town to give my life to Jesus. That day was April 28, 1974—the "Day of my Dependence" upon Jesus.

You see, I didn't make Jesus my co-pilot that day. I made Him the Lord of my life. That day, I became independent from the devil's ownership of my life and totally dependent upon Jesus rulership.

Our dependence upon the Lord results in our freedom:
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
(Prov. 3:5-6)

Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
(Ps. 37:3-5)

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
(John 15:5)

For in him we live, and move, and have our being.
(Acts 17:28)

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
(Gal. 5:1)
On every July Fourth, we celebrate our independence as "one nation under God." But as Christians, let us remind ourselves of the day we gave our lives to Jesus and declared our personal "dependence day" upon Him.

No matter what comes to try to take away our rights and privileges as Americans or as Children of God, remember that our nation is one of the most powerful nations on earth, and that our God is the Almighty.

Our rights in this world are not determined by what some country, government, denomination, individual, court, or flip of a coin may suggest.

What determines our rights is the day that we make a declaration of "In God we Trust"—the day of our dependence.
