“You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You” (Isa. 26:3 NKJ).
Part Two
A mind stayed on the Lord. Have you ever wondered what that means? In the original Hebrew text the word translated stayed is camak (saw-mak’) which is defined in its reflexive form as “to lean upon.”
One older grammarian consulted described the action expressed by camak as “to place or lay something upon an object so that it rests upon and is totally supported by that object.” The word thus contains the idea of something’s being undergirded, upheld or sustained so that it remains firm and unmoved.
When a person’s mind is “leaning on” the Lord, the peace promised him is sure and perpetual. You and I can lean on the Almighty continually and His peace will be ours continually. This “leaning” is an attitude of mind which gives God the benefit of every doubt and question; it trusts Him unequivocally and believes implicitly that all things work together for good to those who love Him.
When the Bible says that David was a man after God’s own heart, it is speaking of direction. It is saying that David’s inclinations (his leanings) were toward the Lord. David sought after God. He even pursued Him. David was always headed in God’s direction. We can display this same kind of continual pursuit of the Lord by having a heart which is always hungry for Him.
One way to transform Isaiah 26:3 into a personal confession is to state: “The Lord will watch over me and guard me with an internal and an external peace because my mind and its thought are ever leaning in His direction.”
