Stay With It Until It Overflows

by Lynne Hammond | Devotions for the Praying Heart

My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.
(Prov. 4:20 – 22)

There are times in all of our lives when we forget that Jesus is our healer. There are times when sickness strikes us and because we’ve let the revelation of divine healing slip, we find our faith knocked back on its heels.

What should we do when that happens?

We must meet with Jesus afresh over the pages of our Bibles and let Him quicken the truth to us again. We must immerse ourselves in His Word and put it into our hearts until it starts flowing out of our mouths. We must stay with it until faith comes and we find ourselves declaring (despite the symptoms of sickness that still cling to our bodies) that we are healed.

To me that process is like putting gasoline in my car. I don’t have to look at the gas gauge to see when the tank is full. I can just keep pumping it in until the gas starts to overflow.

What divine health we could all enjoy if we would stay in that overflow all the time!

Dear praying friend, I encourage you to make a commitment right now to do it. Make a decision to meet with Jesus more often over His healing Word in the days ahead. Keep pumping His Word into your heart by putting it in front of your eyes, in your ears, and in the midst of your heart so that it can become life to you and health to all your flesh.

If you will do that, you can live in the fulfillment of God’s healing promises and His power will flow through you like crystal clear water all the time. You can stop Satan from using sickness to rob you of your effectiveness in prayer.

You can stay well, live long, and finish your assignment as a frontline warrior in the kingdom of God.

On the chilly March night in 1972 when Lynne Hammond took her first step into a life of Spirit-led prayer, she had no idea what was about to happen. All she knew was the hunger in her heart for God wouldn’t let her sleep. In the few short months she’d been born again, her desire to fellowship with Him had grown so strong she could hardly contain it. “Help me, God!” she cried. “I want to know you. I want to be able to talk to you. Please, teach me to pray!”

Suddenly, a heavenly presence flooded the room. Lynne sensed waves of spiritual fire sweeping over her and a beautiful language began to flow like a river from within her. Although she’d never heard of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, she knew instantly, without a doubt—this was God!

What began that night soon blossomed into a life of prayer that ultimately became a ministry of prayer when, in 1980, Lynne and her husband, Mac, founded Living Word Christian Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Under Lynne’s leadership, the prayer ministry at Living Word has become an internationally recognized model for developing effective pray-ers in the local church.

A teacher and an author, Lynne publishes a newsletter called Prayer Notes, has written numerous books, and currently serves as the national prayer director for Daughters for Zion. Her passion for inspiring and leading others into the life of Spirit-led prayer continues to take her around the world to minister to believers whose heart cry, like hers, is “Lord, teach me to pray!”
