“Redeeming the time…” (Eph. 5:16 NKJ).
This verse contains an illuminating Greek word for time: kairos (kahee-ros’). This is time adapted to circumstances. Kairos can be defined as:
1) A set time for action
2) the right moment
3) the opportune point of time when a thing should be done
4) the time appointed to accomplish a certain task.
In Ephesians 5:16 we are admonished by Paul to “redeem” the time (kairos) appointed to us by the Lord. Newer translations render this phrase, “buying up the opportunity,” indicating we need a natural acumen to help us to interpret our spiritual opportunities.
Revelation 12:12 says that Satan is furious because he knows his time (kairos) is short. His opportunities for going to and fro will shortly be curtailed. Part of the reason he is so furious is because he knows that his restless roaming will soon terminate in his being chained to the bottomless pit.
In 1 Chronicles 12:32 of the Greek Old Testament, we read that the children of Issachar had understanding of the time (kairos) to know what Israel ought to do. The distinctive feature of the children of Issachar is their sensitivity to their situation. They not only were cognizant of their opportunities, but also had a wise plan of action.
As Christians we must remember that opportunities we have today will not last forever. Jesus said it succinctly: “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work” (John 9:4 NKJ).
The tribe of Issachar had a contemporary understanding of their surrounding society and all its problems. They were also able to determine the best course to take. We can, too!
