What are the six basic doctrines mentioned in Hebrews, chapter six, and why are they so important?
Let’s review that specific text:
Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
(Heb. 6:1-2)
These six basic doctrines are important because they are foundational. If Christians do not understand these six truths, then they will not be stable and strong in the Lord.
Notice what can happen to Christians who do not have this foundation in their lives: “That we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness by which they lie in wait to deceive” (Eph. 4:14).
If we want to be stable and uncompromising in our faith, we must have these six foundational truths in place in our lives. If they are not, then we will be susceptible to false doctrine and deceitful men.
I would like to look at these six doctrines, or teachings, in the same way we would the foundation of a house. If we lay a 50 x 80 foot foundation, then we can only build a fifty by eighty foot house.
A 40 x 70 foot house will not fit on this foundation, nor will a 60 x 100 foot house. The size of the house is determined by the size of the foundation.
We can assure the proper interpretation of the entire Bible when we have these six doctrines as foundation in our lives. False interpretation of Scripture will not fit our foundation and we will reject it every single time.
