The United States is a nation that, in the span of a little over 200 years, has made a significant impact on the world. With its economic and military power, it's easy to assume that it would play a major role in the end times.

However, can the U.S. be found in the Scriptures? If so, what role will it play in these last days?

Over two centuries ago, God looked for a nation to fulfill three assignments:

1. To offer support to the Jewish nation (Gen. 12:1-4)
2. To be a peacemaker (Matt. 5:9)
3. To preach the Gospel to the world (Mark 16:15)

He knew that a country that actively practiced the biblical principles on which it had been founded would accomplish what He had called it to do. Scores of Christian immigrants desiring religious freedom prepared America to fulfill her destiny. Today, this country is fulfilling all three assignments.

For example, in 1948, the U.S. helped the Jewish nation to come into existence. In addition, President Harry Truman pledged to help Israel gain recognition and become a member of the United Nations. Today, President Bush continues to give support to that country.

The U.S. has also played the role of peacekeeper in the first and second world wars, as well as in the Korean and Vietnam wars. Currently, thousands of American soldiers are fighting to maintain peace in Iraq. But most importantly, the U.S. deploys more missionaries to the world than any other country.

Although the Bible doesn't directly spell out "the United States of America," this country can be found in the Scriptures. According to Revelation 12:6 and 14, the U.S. can be considered the "great eagle:"

And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God.... And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished....

Two things that qualify the U.S. as being the "great eagle" include:

• Its symbolic representation, the bald eagle, which signifies freedom, power, grace and courage
• Its air force—one of the largest in existence—which is capable of airlifting Israelis to a hiding place for protection.

So what role will America play in these last days? Not a very large one. According to one source, the U.S. will no longer be the superpower that it is today. Why? Because it is primarily a Christian nation, it would lose a large part of its population to the rapture of the church.

People from all economic backgrounds would disappear in the blink of an eye, leaving the country in financial ruin. This sudden change would most likely shift the U.S. into third-world status, and the impact would be felt worldwide. However, this is just speculation.

History has shown that America, founded on biblical principles, has made Christianity its backbone. Is it possible that the country would reject God after the rapture? Definitely not! Those left behind will still have a chance to continue spreading the Gospel message.

The seeds that were planted by the U.S. before the rapture through its churches, outreaches and missionaries will continue to impact individuals long after its status as a superpower—a great eagle—has diminished.
