Why does the Old Testament use the names "LORD GOD," "Lord," and "God" in different verses?

Most Bibles list the name of God and the Lord in these different ways to make us aware that they are being translated from different Hebrew words. Whenever you see the word "LORD" or "GOD" in all capital letters, they are being translated from the Hebrew word "Yah-wey."

This Hebrew word, which is one of many names given to God, speaks of the grace, mercy, love, and justice of God. Here is one of many verses of scripture where it is used.
Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments.
(Ex. 6:6 KJV)
In Exodus, the LORD is going to work justice and show mercy to the children of Israel, by freeing them from slavery.

When you see the word "Lord," with just the first letter capitalized, it's being translated from the Hebrew word "Adonai." This name for God speaks of the Lord as a ruler and controller. Let's examine a verse where this word is used.
The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.
(Ps. 37:12-13 KJV)
The Lord (Adonai) shall laugh at the wicked because He's in control, and the ruler of the whole earth. Every knee and tongue will one day have to confess to Him (Phil. 2:10-11).

Finally, when you see the word "God," with just the first letter capitalized, it's being translated from the Hebrew word "Elohym." This name for God speaks of His creative works or abilities. Let's take a look at how it's used.
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.... And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.
(Gen. 1:1,26 KJV)
Throughout the first and second chapters of Genesis, we see God (Elohym) creating the world as we know it. This knowledge should help you in your Old Testament reading.
