My mother was killed by a tornado many years ago. Ever since that time I've had bitterness in my heart towards God. Why did God take my mom in such a terrible way?

I don't believe that it was God who took your mother. God doesn't need to take people through tornadoes, earthquakes, or other violent acts.

During this dispensation, God does not cause tornadoes, earthquakes, and other catastrophic events. This dispensation puts us under the grace of God. These events are a result of the effects of Adam's sin against creation.

God created the earth to last forever and to be without these destructive forces. Notice what the Bible says happened as a result of Adam's sin:
The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.
(Rom. 8:19-21 NIV)
Creation, according to other scriptures, was subject to this frustration when Adam sinned. This is when the earth was cursed (Gen. 3:17).

The earth, animal, and insect kingdoms became perverted and imperfect when Adam sinned.

God isn't causing these terrible things to happen. When Jesus returns to the earth, the heavens and the earth will be freed from the curse. We will not have any of these catastrophic events taking place.

Your mother's untimely death was the result of living in an imperfect and decaying world. Knowing God did not cause the tornado should help you release your bitterness. May God comfort you and ease your grief as you deal with this tragic loss.
