How can we do greater works than Jesus did? I don't understand how this is possible.

Let's examine the entire text to which you refer.
Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
(John 14:10-14 KJV)
The works are the healings and miracles that were done through His ministry (Matt. 4:24). Jesus said the believer should do the same works that He did. Every believer can lay hands on sick people and see God heal them (Mark 16:16-18).

Jesus also said that we would do greater works than even bringing healing to the sick. Jesus did the spectacular and raised the dead. I don't believe that greater works refers to more spectacular healings than Jesus performed.

The Greek word translated as greater refers to "volume or the amount of." The greater works that Jesus said the believers would do actually refers to the amount of healings that would come through the church. Jesus was restricted to one place at a time.

However, as His body, Christians are everywhere. We can do a greater amount of works than Jesus did.
