What did Jesus mean when He said, "Whoever does the will of my Father will be my mother, brother, etc.?"

Then one said to Him, "Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You." But He answered and said to the one who told Him, "Who is My mother and who are My brothers?"

And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, "Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother."
(Matt.12:47-50 NIV)
Jesus was explaining how people on the earth become related to Him. He indicated that the natural ties that His brothers, sisters, and mother had were only temporary and earthly.

The most important relationship we can have with God is spiritual; we can become His child by putting faith in Christ Jesus. "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus" (Gal. 3:26 NKJ).

Doing the will of God, which Jesus referred to in Matthew 12:50, is demonstrated by putting faith in Christ Jesus. The following Scripture instructs how to do the will of God and become His children.
But what does it say? "The word is near you, even in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation. For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame."
(Rom. 10:8-11 NKJ)
