In most cases, the children of Israel were led or guided by the prophets. God communicated with these people through Old Testament prophets such as Moses, Elijah, Isaiah, and Jeremiah.
In the following Scripture we see Moses explaining why God led the people this way during that time.
The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear, according to all you desired of the LORD your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, "Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, nor let me see this great fire anymore, lest I die."Remember, God the Holy Spirit did not dwell on the inside of the Old Testament saints. Neither did they have access to the written Word of God. They needed to rely on God's Prophets to hear His Word and get His guidance.
And the LORD said to me: "What they have spoken is good. I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him."
(Deut. 18:15-19 NKJ)
The Christian, however, is to be guided by the written Word of God (Bible) and the Holy Spirit, Who is on the inside of us. God is still using the prophetic ministry today. Modern day Prophets, however, should only confirm what God has already shown us.
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves" (James 1:22 NKJ).
" For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (Rom. 8:14-16 NKJ).
