Why did God cause Uzzah to die when he made an attempt to keep the Ark of the Covenant from falling?

Let's read the specific text to which you refer.
And when they came to Nachon's threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by the ark of God.
(2 Sam. 6:6-7 NKJ)
It's important to understand that the Ark of the Covenant was the manifested presence of God in the Old Testament. To be in the presence of the Ark was the same as standing before the throne of God. During this time period, natural man could not touch God and live because of his sin nature.

This is why God had given Moses strict orders that no one but the high priest (who was sanctified by blood sacrifices and calling) could touch the Ark. God also told Moses that the Ark could only be transported on the shoulders of the priest. King David didn't do his homework and was having the Ark transported in a cart.

Poor Uzzah was trying to help by catching the Ark, but when natural man comes in contact with the presence of God they will die every time. I'm convinced this is why Uzzah died or was struck down.

Today, if a person accepts Jesus Christ as Savior, calling on His name for salvation, the blood of Jesus cleanses us and not only makes us worthy to stand before God, but makes a modern day Ark that God lives in! (1 Cor. 6:19, 2 Cor. 6:16).
