But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
(Ps. 37:11 KJV)
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus quoted that verse saying, "Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth" (Matt. 5:5 KJV). In other words, the meek will inherit this world's stuff.

We always think of a meek person as being wimpy and weak, and some people think, Well, if I'm just quiet and shy, God will promote me. But that's a lie! You won't find that anywhere in the Bible.

To be meek means that you're teachable.
It means that you're humble and you're not full of pride.

Humility Vs. Pride
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
(James 4:10)
God doesn't want us to be humble so He can squash us. He wants us to be humble so He can lift us up.

Some teachings have painted the mental picture in Christians that being meek is the same thing as being weak.

But that's not what God says: "If you'll ask, I'll give you the power to get wealth. I'll give you power over the devil. I'll give you power to be a witness. I'm not going to do everything for you, but I'll give you the power to do it yourselves."

(If we're meek it means we're willing to receive from God and He will exalt us.)

How do we get lifted up? By doing what God showed us to do. How can He show us what to do? We just need to humble ourselves and ask Him. He'll lift us up by giving us revelation, understanding, wisdom, courage and strength. But if we're unteachable, we'll fail.
My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge.
(Hosea 4:6 KJV)
Have you ever had to deal with an arrogant kid who thinks he knows everything? That's a bad way to grow up. If he's proud and unteachable, he won't learn or grow or reach his potential in life, and the same truth goes for us.

Studying To Show Ourselves Approved
Kids who won't be taught will have destroyed lives. That's why we need to help and train our children be teachable (and to do that means we must be teachable ourselves.)

It's an act of love to train our children to have good study habits and to learn from their teachers in life.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
(2 Tim. 2:15 KJV)
If you're studying, listening, and being teachable, you won't be ashamed. On the other hand, If you're trying to prove how smart you are, you're going to fall flat on your face. God makes it simple. Pride can destroy our life, but humility will bring us blessing and peace.

This is why it's so important to be in the Word on a daily basis, and to teach our children that the Word is the source for answers in our life. There is not a situation we can get ourselves into that God doesn't have an answer for, and when we meditate on His Word we set ourselves up for sucess. (See Joshua 1:8 KJV)

What a "teachable" person looks like:

1) They are humble. They realize that they don't know everything and they aren't afraid to ask questions. It's that childlike quality of asking a million questions. God tells us to ask, seek, knock — when we do He promises that we will receive, find, and the door will be opened. Humble people know this concept well.

2) They have the fear of the Lord. (That's the beginning of wisdom.) Being reverent and having a healthy respect and awe for the Lord is important because it keeps us teachable.

3) They aren't afraid to learn something new. Unteachable, proud, arrogant and bitter people are left on the side of the road while life blows right by them. The Bible says, "The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion." (Prov. 28:1 KJV) It takes boldness to try new things and learn new concepts in any area of life.

God Will Help Us Get What We Need
If our goal is to be humble and teachable, where do we look for the knowledge we need?

There's a ton of information out there, so how do we weed out what we need from what the enemy's trying to throw at us? I believe the Spirit of God will lead us to the right information. He'll direct us to the right people, the right places and the right books we need to find the information we're lacking.

Without question, the most important book of information we can pick up is the Word of God. It has the knowledge and wisdom we need for every area of our life. It's the foundation for everything else we learn.

Every bit of information I encounter either agrees with or opposes the Word of God. Therefore, I believe you have to wash your mind daily with the water of the Word or you'll be deceived.

One of the best ways I have found to wash myself with the Word is to write Scriptures down on three-by-five notecards and confess them over myself regularly. It's a great idea for everyone.

Here is an example of what I've done for myself. An area I need help in is staying organized, so every day I ask God to help me be organized. I confess by faith that I am organized. Why? Because by nature, I was not an organized person.

These are some of the scriptures I had written down for myself:
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord; and he delighteth in his way.
(Ps. 37:23 KJV)
For God is not the author of confusion, but peace, as in all churches of the saints.
(1 Cor. 14:33 KJV)
Let all things be done decently and in order.
(1 Cor. 14:40 KJV)
Commit thy works unto the Lord, and  thy thoughts shall be established.
(Prov. 16:3 KJV)
I put my face up to the mirror in the morning and say these Scriptures over myself and thank my Heavenly Father:

"God, I thank you that I'm an organized person. My family is organized. My ministry is organized. We've got it together because of You."

You'll start to think differently just talking to yourself like that and God will watch over His Word.
