Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
(Hosea 4:1)
We have abandoned the truth in my lifetime.

In the span of a few decades we quit believing that truth can be known. As a result our society, and much of the church of Jesus Christ, is mired in a swamp of moral relativism and secular humanism.

The world in which I was raised not only believed in absolute truth; people actually knew right from wrong. There was an objective standard against which behavior was measured.

That standard was God’s word. Even non-Christians understood that scripture was the basis of morality and law. We still make reference to Judeo-Christian values, but the vast majority of Americans have set aside those values as outdated and outworn.

Today there is “no truth in the land.”

Over two-thirds of all Americans believe there is not such thing as absolute truth. Even more surprising is that only 90% of those who call themselves “born again Christians” believe in absolute moral truths! (Barna Survey 2008.)

This is astonishing! 90% of those surveyed, who claim to believe the Bible is true, turn right around and say that truth is relative and that what is right and wrong depends on the situation!

Of those who profess to believe in absolute truth, the majority still do not act in a manner consistent with that belief.

Too many Christians have an incorrect view of the truth on which their faith rests. You see, it’s not correct just to believe that Christianity is true. Christianity is not just true; it rests on the ultimate truth.

It’s one thing to believe that what the Bible says about Jesus Christ is true—that the virgin birth is true, that Jesus died for our sins, that the resurrection is true, that he is coming back again.

It’s another thing to believe that Jesus is the Truth. That’s what Jesus himself proclaimed: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). There is no other way to God. There is no other truth.

Jesus Christ is the Ultimate Reality. He spoke the heavens and earth into existence and he upholds all things by his power. (Col. 1:16, Heb. 1:3). He is sovereign Lord of the universe.

Christianity is not just something we do on Sunday. It is the way we live. It is acknowledgment of the Truth.

To live in acknowledgment of the Truth means that you allow Jesus Christ to affect your relationship with your family and friends, to govern your business affairs, to direct your conduct and temper your speech. Your words and your actions have eternal consequences.

The best way to be a godly influence in a godless society is simply to keep in mind that your represent the Truth every moment of your life…and then act accordingly.

Impossible? No. Difficult? Often.

But there’s no alternative. If you are a Christian, you are a witness for Jesus Christ in everything you do and say. People in darkness are looking at your life to see the Light.
