“Be my strong habitation, To which I may resort continually…” (Psalm 71:3 NKJ).
This word resort is an interesting one. Embodied in it is the idea of a place where we can get away from the daily hassle of life. One translation of this verse says: “You are a great protecting rock where I am always welcome.”
Another speaks of “A place of security and strength.” Our English word resort is usually associated with a place of rest and amusement. It carries with it the idea of vacation, a change of pace, of recreation, refreshment, renewal, and revival.
My concern is for busy, active, responsible people who need to “continually” resort to the Lord just as David did. How does a mother with growing children find time to resort? She may not be able to get away physically or geographically; however, there is the opportunity spiritually for her to commune with the Lord in the midst of all her family responsibilities. An executive, a mill worker, a student, or a traveler can each have his or her own private “resort.”
I once worked in an office with eight people who were all vocally clamoring for recognition. As non-believers their conversations were not always very “edifying.” I prayed David’s prayer for a place of resort. The water cooler was a busy spot and so was the bathroom.
I finally put a small painting of Jesus in my desk drawer and several times a day would pull the drawer open and gaze on the face of my Savior. In a busy office filled with a lot of noisy activity, I had a few moments of being alone with the Lord. Without any verbal expression, I found a place of resort where I could commune with Jesus. It was a source of strength.
