“My cup runneth over” (Ps. 23:5).
In Psalm 66:12, David writes of His God: “thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.” The Hebrew word translated wealthy in that context is the same Hebrew word translated runneth over in this verse. The word is revayah (rev-aw-yah’) which has to do with an abundance of moisture. This abundance is so overflowing its satisfies all thirst so that the person becomes saturated or satiated.
In Psalm 66:12, David notes that after having been submerged (inundated) by men, fire, and flood, the people of Israel had been brought by their God to a place of overflowing (rev-aw-yah’) abundance and blessing.
The psalmist exults in the Lord’s tender loving shepherd’s care for him and his people. His cup is saturated to overflowing (revayah). He is experiencing more than a sufficiency of God’s wonderful blessings in his life.
Do you think it is possible to live this way today? We hear people say, “I’m just hanging in there,” or, “If I can just make it to payday,” or, “I’m just getting by, just holding on!” Do such statements reveal the presence of an overflowing abundance in these people’s lives?
Revayah indicates living in a realm of abundant blessing. It suggests having not only a cup of your own, but having that cup full to overflowing. The overflow always becomes a surplus to share with others.
Deliver us, Lord, from all the restrictions we put on Your bountifulness!
