Demon Power And The Occult

by Lester Sumrall | Uncategorized

The Bible reveals the absolute truth about the world of the supernatural, and especially the spirit world. According to Jesus, Peter, Paul, James and John, there are demons and evil spirits.

And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? For the living to the dead?
(Isa. 8:19)

There is an amazing and remarkable revival of demon power in this country. There is also great publicity in the mass media about it.

The Bible reveals the absolute truth about the world of the supernatural, and especially the spirit world. According to Jesus, Peter, Paul, James and John, there are demons and evil spirits.

The Very Core Of The Occult Is A Quest For Supernatural Power

  • Every witch doctor seeks great power
  • Every wizard seeks to know the unknown
  • This is power outside of God—other than holiness or purity

An Angel Became A Devil Seeking Power

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
(Isa. 14:12-17)

The reason people engage in demonic activities is because they are seeking illegitimate power. Another reason is because the devil is never satisfied, nor has he satisfied anyone who follows him. He makes the human greedy for more; he always promises more than he ever gives.

However, a Christian’s quest for power should always be God’s power. With this power, we can:

  • Heal
  • Lift burdens
  • Be enriched in God
  • Be unselfish

Why Do People Pursue The Occult?

  • There are millions who turn their lives over to gurus and cults because of big problems in their lives. They seek release without repentance. The deceiving spirits claim to answer their questions about life.
  • Some pursue the occult to escape insecurity. They can’t stand up to the strain, the wear, and the fear of life. They feel like failures.
  • Demon power is an escape from reality. It is like alcohol or drugs. However, those under the influence must come back and face life!
  • Some pursue the occult simply because they want to know the unknown (Ouija boards, tarot cards, oriental meditation, etc.).

The Burden Of The Occult

  • One of the means of seeking occult-like power is the use of drugs. Due to the use of psychedelic drugs, the human brain is tormented and sometimes even destroyed.
  • The occult counter-culture bears a heavy burden of privation, misunderstanding, and rejection.
  • The occult makes harsh demands of its victims and causes long terms consequences. It is a big price to pay for deception.

What Does God Say About The Occult?

When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, or practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.

Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.
(Deut. 18:9-12)

Clearly, according to the Word, we are to avoid all forms of the occult and focus only on God’s power and goodness. Power from any other source is sinful, and it is an abomination to God.
