“And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God” (Rom. 4:19-20).
How could Abraham “stagger not” at the promise of God? A 90-year-old woman and a 100-year-old man having a child? That was a big promise! How could he not stagger? I mean, today many stagger at “by Jesus’ stripes, you were healed”!
“Being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body.” The word considered in the original Greek means “to observe” or “to perceive.” So you could say it this way: “And being not weak in faith, he observed not his own body now dead, when he was about 100 years old.”
Abraham didn’t sit there and perceive how his body felt. He didn’t dwell on how old his body was. He didn’t say, “Oh, Lord, I’m 100 years old, and Sarah is 90. It’s just not going to work.”
Abraham didn’t observe his own body or the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He was dwelling on the answer instead of the problem. That’s why he could “stagger not” at the promise of God. And as Abraham filled his heart with the goodness and faithfulness of Almighty God, he became fully persuaded that what God had promised, He was also able to perform.
Being not weak in faith, I consider not my own
situation or circumstances. I consider not my
own body or any symptoms of sickness. I am
strong in faith, knowing that what God has promised,
He is also able to perform in my life!
