“I have been anointed with fresh oil” (Ps. 92:10 NKJ).
Part One
In the Old Testament, kings, priests, and prophets were anointed with oil. Revelation 1:6 tells us that Jesus has made us believers kings and priests. We are also told that He has imparted prophecy to us. His three leadership functions have thus been translated to us.
The Hebrew word translated anointed here is balal (baw-lal’) and refers to mixing and mingling since the anointing oil was prepared by mixing together different ingredients.
In the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:8-10), three kinds of anointings can be seen:
The Kingly anointing is evident in the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, and the discerning of spirits. Proverbs 16:10 says: Inspired decisions are on the lips of a king…. (RSV).
The Priestly anointing is evidenced in faith, miracles, and gifts of healing. Many times when Jesus healed the people. He sent them to the priests who were responsible for ministering to the sick and declaring them recovered.
The Prophetic anointing is represented by tongues, interpretation of tongues, and prophecy because these are vocal gifts.
Christians are anointed with the fresh oil of the Holy Spirit for kingly, priestly, and prophetic functions. All three anointings mingled together constitute the “fullness of God” (Eph. 3:19). That fullness is ours for the asking.
