Fullness for the Asking – Part II

by Dick Mills | The Spirit Filled Believer

“I have been anointed with fresh oil” (Ps. 92:10 NKJ).

Part Two

A key word here is “fresh.” In Hebrew it is ra’anan (rah-an-awn’) which is defined as: “flourishing, green, happy, cheerful, bright, new, luxuriant, prosperous.”

Besides indicating an anointing to set apart for service and to empower for spiritual ministry, this word embodies some additional features that can help us become better stewards of the Lord.

There is a refreshment implied in the word ra’anan. The Bible In Basic English translates this phrase, “…the best oil is flowing on my head,” while The New International Version renders it, “…fine oils have been poured upon me.” Moffat’s version reads, “…thou dost revive my failing strength.”

All three indicate a before-and-after situation. Before anointing, we see a picture of a sun-baked desert traveler with dry skin, chapped lips, and languishing spirits. The anointing with fresh oil changes all that to a picture of vitality, exhilaration, and renewed vigor.

There is also an in-strengthening suggested here. One grammarian has defined ra’anan in these terse words: “The anointing in Psalm 92:10 seems also to imply a penetrating power.” A fresh anointing can turn spiritual weariness into spiritual energy and revived strength.

Also in this word ra’anan is an association with hospitality, with the proper way an honored guest should be treated (John 11:2; Luke 7:46; Ps. 23:5). The compassionate Savior sees us journeying through the wilderness – world and bids us stop along our weary way to enjoy His hospitality, refreshment, and renewal.
