You are a spirit being who has a soul and who lives in a body. John 4:24 says, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” God is also a Spirit, so it makes sense that He’s going to talk to your spirit.
I’ve had many people tell me, “I don’t know if the thought I had was God speaking to me, or if it was just me. I don’t know if it was the devil. I don’t know who it was!”
People get all confused. As believers, we’re not to be confused. The Bible is very clear that we can be led by His Spirit. Romans 8:14 says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
It doesn’t read quite that way in the Greek, because this almost makes it sound as though you are not really a son or daughter of God if you’re not led. What it means is that if you are a son or daughter of God, His Spirit will lead you.
Romans 8:15-17 goes on to say,
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.
You’re to be led by the Spirit of God if you’re a son or a daughter of God. So God is going to speak to your spirit. The Spirit of God is always trying to lead you. He wants to lead you out of bad situations; He wants to lead you away from accidents.
God is not in the business of laughing at our foolishness when we step into bad situations;
His Spirit is trying to lead us away from them.
