‘He Shall Know….’

by Dick Mills | Uncategorized

“Let each be fully convinced in his own mind” (Rom. 14:5 NKJ).

Out of the Reformation there emerged a manifesto, a new idea that each believer could read the Bible for himself. He could trust the Holy Spirit to interpret what he read and illuminate it to him personally. Then he could determine the will of God for his own life and act accordingly.

Having the Word of God for a guide and the inner witness of the Holy Spirit for confirmation allows each individual to be a priest to the Lord. The priesthood of the believer is thus a Reformation concept.

Frequently people approach me to ask me to make some decision for them that they should make for themselves. Some ask if I think they should get married. Others ask if they should sell their house, or quit their job, or get a divorce.

According to this verse in Romans, each person is capable of finding God’s will for himself. Each is capable of making his own decisions. James 1:5 encourages us to ask God for the wisdom and direction we need, fully expecting to receive it.

There is safety in a multitude of counselors, but after all the suggestions, input and advice are accumulated and analyzed, each of us must make the final decision for himself.

Earlier in life I went to others and relied upon their knowledge and ability. Slowly and graciously the Lord brought me to the place where I could be persuaded in my own mind. It took a long time to reach that place, and it was not without mistakes along the way, but the trip was worth it.

In John 7:17 the Lord Jesus says of God, “If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know….” (NKJ). This verse says that you and I can be fully convinced in our own mind!
