People get into financial trouble when they violate the scriptural principle of not coveting.
Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
(Phil. 4:11-13)
People get into financial trouble when they violate the scriptural principle of not coveting. To covet is to long after something. We’re supposed to fix our desire upon Jesus. He is the one whom we long after and follow.
The mentality of the world (and a lot of believers stay in the way of the world) is that they have to keep up with the Joneses. Or else they have big eyes, desiring everything they see.
When people run after money so they can be fulfilled, they are guilty of coveting. Coveting gets you into trouble. God has promised to give you abundance because He loves you and you obey Him. But life is not based on what you have. Your life is in Jesus. He is your sufficiency. All the rest is just bonus material that God gives you to use as you bring more people to Jesus.
