When someone says to you, “I’m doing the best that I can,” you let them know that there is nothing they can do that is good enough to be saved. They must come to Jesus Christ.
I ran across someone the other day who said, “Well, I’m not going to be saved because there are too many hypocrites in the church.” Then you want to point out that Romans 14:12 says, “So then everyone of us shall give an account of himself to God.”
Romans 2:1-3 says,
Therefore thou are inexcusable O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest, doest the same things. But we are sure that the judgement of God is according to truth against them, which commit such things. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgement of God?
(Rom. 2:1-3)
Colossians 3:25 says, “But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is not respect of persons with God.”
John 21:22 says, “Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou me.”
In other words God says, “Don’t point to anyone else—you just follow me. It doesn’t matter if there are hypocrites in the church, that does not excuse you.”
There are those who believe they are good enough…they are already good people. Then you want to point out that in the story of Nicodemus, he was a religious teacher. He was a Rabbi and the Lord pointed out in John 3:3-5 how you have to be born again; it doesn’t matter how good you are.
