“In quietness and confidence shall be your strength” (Isa. 30:15).
This verse assures us of quietness and confidence – in that order. Find quietness, and confidence will follow after it as a matter of course.
These two are twins – two friends to go with us on our pilgrim’s journey. As the psalmist David declares in Psalm 23 that goodness and mercy shall follow him all the days of his life, so this verse proclaims that we can expect quietness and confidence to accompany us as we travel the road of life.
Quietness is not passivity, fatalism, or a state of detachment. Quietness is not resignation to a painful situation, a sort of “why try?” mindset or outlook. Quietness is a total absence of noisy distraction, tumultuous turmoil, of frantic, hectic pressure. It is God’s gift of peace given right in the midst of difficulty and tribulation, “It’s all right; God is in control.” Such calmness produces confidence.
Confidence is translated elsewhere as assurance and boldness. In the midst of quietness, confidence surfaces and emerges as a potent force.
The Lord gives quietness to the seeking, praying soul. The end result is confidence. Girded about with these two spiritual powers, we can proceed with a new strength and determination to finish the task we have been called to accomplish.
